MJC Optical Technology expertise: Optical characterization of materials (sample application)

Optical techniques permit comprehensive characterization of small particles, such as the marine phytoplankton cells shown above (magnification ~1000 times). Such cells are the primary source of food for animal life in the sea as well as the primary source of oxygen. Phytoplankton can alter the spectral content of sun light back-scattered by sea water. This alteration can be detected from space, permitting efficient monitoring of the ocean productivity.
